How I came to dislike living in a capitalist society
- I think it was my upbringing, my parents didn't mould me toward any career from a young age, I seem to remember my dad deriding career minded people, maybe, it's all a long time ago and I don't remember clearly. Five years ago, I was working in something as close to a career I'd ever got. I'd been in a small local business for five years, in the interview, a friend of the family who worked at this place, pretty much did most of the talking for me - selling my skills, for which I was grateful, I am a useless interviewee, the owner of the business was wearing a tracksuit, and was slumped in a chair, making jokes. Anyway, five years later, a colleague (of the persuasion that says "what's to stop people identifying as toasters" as an argument against transgender people) was proclaiming his disdain of the youth, and one of our younger colleagues who was clueless, clueless about the direction they wanted to take their life, while he, the man, was thrown out the house by his father at sixteen, blah blah blah.
I was clueless. I wanted to be an artist, but other than how to make art, I was clueless - especially when it came to making art for other people - all I wanted to do was follow my inner drive to create. I was absolutely clueless about how to proceed after college, where I came close to failing my a-levels. I was still clueless after university studying art.
It seems preposterous that a young person without any experience of work should have any idea about a career. Maybe I was just someone who was considered by my teachers as not worth directing toward a career. It was an art therapist of an art therapy group I attended between college and university my doctor had directed me toward that had suggested I go to university to study art.
At school we used a computer system that asked us questions about seemingly random stuff, and it told me my ideal career was either to be a mastic asphalt spreader, or a piano tuner. A lot of us considered the jobs suggested as jokes.
I'm another who fell for the what has recently been a widely expressed trap - believing that working hard will be rewarded. It's futile. There's no reward if you don't quite fit in, no reward if you show signs, hints, expressions of resistance to the system.
As the 90s progressed, I kinda felt betrayed, some of the ideas floating around in the early 90s, that had excited me with their potential, seemed to be giving way to capitalism. Capitalism was homogenising the scenes, multiple genres of (art/music/creativity/etc) previously existed alongside each other became fractured, tunnel-visions of what they could be, separated and capitalised on.
Then in the early 2000's I came across Linux, and Free/Libre/Open Source Software, the ideas around this excited me again, sharing of information, people from around the world contributed to software development, removal of the black box, providing people with less economic means access to software, and access to learning how to modify and create software. And again, the same thing happened. Gradually the corporations came along, and the spread of anti-FLOSS sentiments became evident, people - individuals - complaining that the license's weren't working for corporations, and Richard M. Stallman who'd previously been heralded for his contributions was starting to be framed as too hardline and troublesome (I don't know the details of this, don't think it was strictly B&W), that the licensing terms for software he pushed were too restrictive for corporations, and also for example people like me who were supportive of software freedom, but also wanted to play games with their NVIDIA graphics cards - free software wasn't able to match the performance of the proprietary binary blob graphics drivers (ie a black box system, hiding it's workings, not able to be contributed back to, not able to be modified, other than by the corporation who sold it).
Eventually people who'd previously been fans of Linux, were starting to [[words... words... what word...]] move over to the idea that freedom meant the freedom to chose whatever system worked best for their use case, and it seemed that for them, at work in a corporation with the budget, proprietary systems (ie MS Windows) were the answer.
Why I dislike capitalist society.... Just consistently failing to achieve anything that has consistently progressed my career, consistently failing to sell myself, consistently failing to be someone I'm not.... YadadyayayddAyada
And that's just my personal selfish reasons. The reasons which are real to me which I've directly experienced.
The experiences of other people in the world, are a million times worse, such that my experience is considered privileged - white male privilege. Compared to many of my peers I don't feel that privilege. I see people around me and wonder why they deserve what they have and I do not.
But capitalism funds genocide in Gaza, it's not always easy to resist pushing this stuff away, as in terms of my experience, it's too abstract, I've experienced nothing like it, I can't comprehend living under those conditions. Two stories recently I've read recently which have just horrified me as to, [i]"this is what people are intentionally doing to other people"[/i]?

Absolutely amazing, sincere, authentic, heartfelt, and the total truth. I can relate totally. It starts with our own experience and interaction and observations, the "selfish" reasons as necessary and people who scoff at that are silly, we are just people too and our scope is only so much at first. Once we have things getting us down personally, then we may be able to relate to others who have experienced the same, and include those who have experienced similar, and as our knowledge of the world grows and news starts reaching us, we hear about more and more horror, things we can feel are certainly far worse, reaching towards the incomprehensibly malign. In the days of other atrocities towards the impoverished and oppressed, people generally had cause to put it out of their mind due to it seeming like it might be the poor vs. starving, a matter of people far away who were attacking each other for some reason, fighting over resources but still fighting, even though that might have been a lie, it was a comforting one. Here and now we have been pushed towards impoverishment ourselves, living on the edge with frightening things projected for us and even worse for those younger than us, and then without sufficient justification for what we are experiencing, we receive the news that something even worse is creeping our way and across the whole world, that something so dark could happen, this time inflicted by a local and familiar type, the Western and Westernized Military Industrial Complex activated in targeted civilians and a populace of non-combatants, attacking places we thought might surely be safe and where there might be care, schools, hospitals, places of worship, apartment buildings, and then when the people have nothing left, makeshift tents, and even those are targeted with the most extreme firepower, bombs, and weapons the WMIC (Western(&ized) Military Industrial Complex) can offer, if they even pretend to withhold or delay one, they get shamed and accused of failing to support the just war against basic humanity, women, children, and babies.
Nothing in our history has been so unmasked as this. I'm pretty sure the Germans were even kept in the dark largely about what was going on, and the way that the Germans went about their secret evil may have been more restrained, orderly, and civilized, as inhumane as it was thoroughly and throughout, than what is being witnessed here, the flagrant disregard for any rules or decency or humanity, the horrific things being done openly and made known to the public, and the complete betrayal, which was only just a revelation of a state of hypocrisy that was always present, of the traitors who have positioned themselves in power everywhere, and who basically laugh "what can you even do?", and the truth is, basically nothing, as is clear, we have too many things we are trying to protect, the risks are too high, and once there is nothing to lose, they'll have takrn away every reasonable means to combat them or their machines, check and mate. Everyone sane can see thrmselves as potentially the next people of G*z*, especially after how each country has been increasing their aggression against their populations who even dare question the nature of what is so obviously wrong there and dangerous for us all, and nothing is being done and all of it was unecessary, and those people had been consistently tortured long before the recent inciting incidents which also seem to be a staged false flag event meant to start aassacre of the population that had nothing to do with any of it and just want to live and be normal and be left alone, but happen to live in hell surrounded by completely irredeemable lunatic scum who show off statistics that the vast majority of their vile and brainwashed hyper chauvinistic and militaristic culture is all for human extermination, of not just these now that they are demonstrating their ire on, but all surrounding, then further off where they are involved in more attacks on the poor, in far flung countries people would never even think they are acting belligerent in and advising in stirring harm towards the poor in general beyond aldo specifically any impoverished Muslims and all Muslims from India and nations in Southeast Asia to various places in Africa, this is basically a World War going on already and for a while which no one is calling out as what it really is, and how the victims are almost entirely civilians being crushed, maimed, and murdered in every way imaginable, as well as r*ped and ridiculed and poisoned and made homeless, and the open actors and agents working all this evil openly are protected by those very clearly complicit as well as so obviously and evidentially proven to be in their pockets as plants, to the point where the conflict of interest should be so clear that the idea that any real people are actually so mad to ever bloody their hands putting these people into power is truly questionable, it seems like it may have always been a lie and pretend, a game, to make the powerless population think they have any say wherr they never did, and now it is becoming all the more apparent.
Time is running out for all us too, to discuss any of these things, since draconian measures are being implimented to make the penalties so harsh as to not be worth the risk, so instead I mostly talk about anything through fantasy and mysticism and frivolities, with tears in my burning eyes about the things going on and getting worse, like how laws are being passed right now to make online conversations and certain statements that are even plainly true or important sentiments banned in favor of criminals who have hijacked all the various governments of the supposed world, first, second, and third. It really is very creepy. Now their are files being released to further undermine any last inkling of trust left and radicalize into full blown conspiracy believers many more people, in order to motivate them to speak up and show themselves and make their ",voice heard" so that they have as much data and evidence against them stored so that they can be hunted down, have their bank accounts "glitch", have false accusations thrown against them which out them in a mire of legal responses that completely crush them, hoping that they will be driven to suicide or that their automatically driven vehicle that has locked them in drives them to their last breath on a planet lost because of a minority of elites who can't be responded to in the way that they aught to be (taken out of power everywhere immediately) to bring instant relief almost everywhere.
Alas, all this was fiction, as it must be, but soon enough and probably even now, that excuse likely won't cut it.

Wow, and that was 1989! It all got so much more like that seemingly since, even to the point of people increasingly not helping babies but hurting them instead.
I keep bringing up the game Lies Of P, which is based on Pinocchio.
I saw this mosquito animation earlier, and noticed the mosquito in the beginning of your selection, how did you become aware of that cartoon, that was a really fitting find!
Please share more if you find any, if you don't mind, that was really interesting for me to see!
I might write something about a chain that I see from maybe a reaction to common thinking and practices leading to religions of self seclusion and shaming and even shame, to J*deo-Christianity, to Capitalism, to Dystopianism and a general hopeless march to destruction ideology permeating world culture now, which also appears in East Asian games depocting European themes and scenes, such as The Lies Of P and Elden Ring, and probably Bloodborne and the Dark Souls series as well.
