Do you agree with this?
Unlike in the past, today's focus is on academic philosophy rather than what I call Socratic philosophy or an authentic quest for truth. This causes me to wonder about the future of meaningful philosophy, a philosophy that changes the life of the inquirer as opposed to playing intellectual gymnastics. Thanks to academic philosophy, most see philosophy as a belief, theory or opinion rather than as a tool. Thus, there is Descartes' philosophy, Huxley's philosophy, Rand's philosophy, and Russell's philosophy as opposed to a generic tool for understanding the nature of life and man's relationship to life, so he can improve the quality of his life. A tool that isn't founded upon or anchored to any authority as academic philosophy is. Today's focus is on knowing "what to think" as opposed to "how to think." It saddens me to see how dependent man is upon authority and security, which are illusions. In turn, he has become more confused and fearful.
He's clearly missed Heidegger and Foucault to name but two lol

Unfortunately Continental Philosophy still isn't exactly mainstream in British universities

I disagree with him. Keep onwards with your readings and studyings whether at a university or at home. I don't believe it matters as we are all trying to discern truth from the same writings, not force feeding students an interpretation (unless it is a lecture only class but that is unheard of here).

Re: Do you agree with this?
So after almost a decade of decay, how do you all feel about this now?
I can't say I know about any of this stuff because I went from pretty much never talking to people familiar with any such things to never talking to anyone at all.
The only person is Academia that I knew was a girl and that was mainly nude, my kind of philosophy.
I've always been thinking for myself and have been wary of the languages or illusions, the glamour of language and constructs that people, alien people that have little to do with me or my way, have tried to cast upon others. That being said, I've read extensively and critically of lots of the gibberish written in and translated to English, which is the only language I speak and can read and which I sort of think in and receive most information in or thoughts with if there is dialogue, so it is the central language of transmission and reception for me, the fluid that the stuff uses to move, but not all stuff might be available in it for all I know, which is why I move towards non-sense and barbaric words and fantasy gobbledygook which has on the one hand baggage, and on the other hand far less baggage due to being built on tropes but still from scratch with a lot of "splainin' to do".
"Creative" work of that nature seems to very dominantly be in the English language now also, making English an important and useful language to hear braindead racist sh*t from.
I'm nearly 40 niw, and though I was losing hope a decade ago, people now seem so brutally r*tarded that I feel the most convenient means to communicate with most people are blocked off by aggressive troglodytes spewing things that only make sense to themselves exclusively or little cliques of crazies.

People are seemingly further from the truth the more they practice bad reading from never learning how to read and process information properly, with the "wisest" being almost exclusively relying on memory and even then just finding stuff, so external memory, but even if it was real memory it wouldn't have mattered, its like a room full of books you can read the characters of, the text, pronouncing things, but don't know what it is saying, and that is scary as heck to see people saying things and parroting stuff with nothing going on in their noggin, and that is exactly the state they are being trained to be in, to be mindless, thoughtless, drones, following astroturf herds they think are real, with not a thought crossing between their crossed eyes. In brief, f*cking morons, and anyone who opposes them or questions them, gets gang r*ped in public by some group wearing human skulls or another with the flayed skins of their enemies, and there is no chance to safely or comfortably find anyone who is interested in using their brain when they are busy watching or listening to vapid and empty information presented by talking heads, just for greedy information collection applied to nothing, not used, just collected, probably quickly forgotten too, amounting to just sound, and many people say they just listen to things as background sound, and I see them with things in their ears like they are mental cases who need to block out the world when they are traveling around instead of being observant of anything.
So I have an extremely poor opinion of everything.
It was only like a very brief window in the 90s where it seemed like there was so much nice stuff for me when I was pretty young, then it was the American News Media not shutting the f*ck up, Clinton, Bush election, 9/11, Bush war, travel issues, Muslims bad, blah blah blah, basically 30 years of mind numbing bullsh*t. A lot of really nice academic books became available during those years, fantastic information was collected, basically better in my opinion than a lot of the stuff after the late 1800s and early 1900s, because the stuff through the 60s to 80s is mainly not very much to my taste and seemed like a lot of snooty crap from pseudo and what sort of rhymes with pseudo, "intellectual" frauds, often of the same grifter ethnicity and cultural background, which seems to have in every dimension poisoned discourse and mixed it with violent cosplaying and callous malice, where hyper-cerebral pedantry masks simple "re-wording", the genius of re-wording things and calling oneself a genius for it, which has now p*ssed upon the peasantry who have taken up the aut*stic practice of beating people over the head with word d*ldos they just laughed to themselves on Discord.

Since I am utterly obsessed with being real and interacting with what I consider reality in the most genuine and sincere way, and practically noone else seems to be doing that or interested in that, I believe there are some fundamental differences worth studying in my upbringing and hopefully not also my genetics that set the story of my formation apart from the story of others, particularly modern young people who seem the most brain broken and cursed of all.
I wasn't raised on anything like the modern internet. I always played with my own imagination. I was always thinking. I had no role models or anyone I looked up to. I wasn't raised with Christianity or the Bible as serious, even though I went to Catholic school and was familiar with it from early on. I had lots of creative, seemingly high quality material to play with. I didn't depend on others for entertainment, I came up with the stories, play, jokes, theories. I was the boss, the one with the thoughts, never a person who followed anyone as there was no one to follow. Most of the time I also had to hide my differences and did not blurt out or vocalize them. Everyone seemed to understand me or give me the impression that they thought of me as intelligent, witty, and most of all earnest and sincere in my thinking, statement, and efforts, easy to distinguish from my jokes or sly mischievousness, so that the impression was that, even to this day with any new encounters, I was successfully coming off as a good person that people thought of as good, no matter what, not morally ambiguous, not "gray", but good, noble, decent, and heroic.
The reason I am bringing this up is because the impression we get of what people may think of us, even if that isn't what they really think (which we may not be able to know for certain), completely impacts how we also act and react and perform.
I think that the way people treat each anonymous person online has been tainted by suspicious, tainted by bad actors and bad experiences, by astroturfing, influence games, advertising, to make everyone thinking everyone else is a rotten f*cling piece of sh*t, and then maybe even pressuring them to only function as that and to accept that as the norm. It is pretty close to a hellscape, with people clamoring for attention and clawing at each other to repeat memes that were said by someone else visibly just before, and again and again.
A lot of these people are not even native English speakers, nor do they speak English at home. There is no time and place in any of this for the truth, and the truth has not been commodified and had any value added to it these days, as one can simply beat up someone and violate them or pull a smear campaign against them, and that is then the truth, it is all about violent power, and this is the mentality of the most vile nightmare creatures from the imaginations of fantasy fiction writers, now the reality of the "Western World" which is steeped in incivility and pointing the finger at other people, made up people, as supposedly worse, which is completely ridiculous at this point, as no people are more hideous than the amoral, non-religious criminal filth spamming the internet, curiously from every nasty, ultra nationalist, g*n*c*dal culture on the planet, so among the Eastern Europeans, Indians, and certain African nations, whoever is nationally a piece of sh*t belonging in the Hague seems to be using the English language to make intelligent thinking and discourse online a near impossibility.
Sentences now can't even be completed without people planning harm for something someone said which are non-controversial, and flaws and errors and perceived insults are being made up by a frustrated and moreover mad bunch from this or that minority faction of cutthroats that have caused everyone to flee in terror and remain hidden.
So it could be people seeking the truth are just hiding under various rocks, but if they try to find it from things like YouTube videos and comments, they are likely to be poisoned.
They truly need "Luck" on their side, that is God by another name, to help them and guide them through this accursed storm, even if what they are told is not anything real and so they rightfully deny it.
The people look diseased too, they literally look sick, and the more they take in of this mental poison, the sicker they look, it has a physiological impact, but they could've been mental from the start, but the people are looked stressed, mental, they have dark circles around their eyes, they look pale, yellowed, their hair is oily, they look unbathed, their health looks bad too, theor shapes are odd, they seem far from any ideal, and even those presenting themselves as ideal look like horrific mutants, with insane looking mutilated faces stretched back, giant lips unnatural to them, and all this is "real".
Where in any of this is there time for the Philo of Sophia?
There was also an impression that, though there was a lot of stuff in the past, there still didn't seem to be as much, and as much if an extremely low quality, which today is called "slop". It seems like people are inundated with everything against beauty and truth and values and decency, like it totally would convincingly seem malicious, sadistic, and even Satanic; an Anti-Human attack, particularly against the poor, but really not sparing ANYONE, even those really doing it, and behind it, and funding it on the highest levels, seem totally twisted by it themselves, as their world shrinks and strangles them.
People have to get to the kids, turn off the internet and do not allow them anywhere near it during their development, and need to speak to them with kindness and justice and explanations that are strong and good, but also encouraging that they reason afterwards also, and ethics and morality seem crucial to incorporate, there seems to be nothing more precious about truth or worthy in it that the values which cultivate true beauty, safety, prosperity for all. The people need to be kept apart from the Satanic drums and chants of out of control, un-curated, frustration and madness, passing mental diseases to each other through the natural, in-built, imitative qualities of primates like human beings, but also other animals.

Re: Do you agree with this?
These may seem to not have anything to do with this thread, but in my opinion they can be said to have to do with this thread called "Do You Agree With This?" since it has to do with layers of ethically complex issues that aldo might seem strange or silly and have to do with getting at the truth and if the usual structures in place which lead to the bad results and reactions are acceptable.
The initial quote in the first post was bringing up and issue which has rapidly advanced and transformed into one that is constantly testing people's moral mettle and hanaguing them for certain efforts or results, adding to how thinking about or discussing in public anything can feel like a minefield and causing a gatekeeping effect where the most obnoxious and radical celebrity voices with belligerent supporters and defenders are the only voices allowed to be heard and to set the agenda of what can be discussed and how. If you don't come in with an army now, you are easily ridiculed out of the room by one troop or another for even daring to wonder about anything without a predisposition or something you're getting at which helps the cause of this or that camp and nation, and by nation I mean the internationally divided groups sharing similar ideological preferences, each vying for power and dominance, while approaching questions can be almodt out of the question.
God's Death seemed to also vanquish Mystery and Curiousity, as people think that the answers are now available and will work on how to have you m*rd*red if you disagree, like how people now are at risk of being doxxed and swatted for the pettiest reasons, where isbthe time or place to have an honest conversation or interaction?
People don't even know thrmselves or look within, everyone is being pushed to really affirm and prove the reality of their carefully curated persona which has no place in reality, they are seemingly lying abd lying to themselves and others about themselves, and even misunderstanding other people that they take as earnest even if it should have been clear whrn prople weren't.
All of this is a mess for free thinking and free thinkers, as even that term now is associated eith prople who get off on saying things to get a reaction.
It all starts with trying to hold on to being real, and being curious, and not being sonething or someone in particular.
All the "educative" material these days that the majority are consuming is monetized, so that what they are learning has been adjusted to present things in a way that leads to monetary rewards for those discussing these things. It may have always been this way, but knowledge was also not as easily available in the past, and the way that people think that information on things is so easy to access is making them stop dhort and ruining their minds and their curiousity and stunting their development.
Mystery as a halting agent is poison, but Mystery as a catalytic agent and a fuel can be extremely important to keep people digging and going further.
The people now are not interested in thinking about things and wondering when the answers are supposedly right at their fingertips, why should anyone do something as absurd as wasting tremendous amounts of energy already used up by processing an overload of unfocused sound and fury from their devil-mirrors, and try to think for themselves, about anything?
So I've seen even adjacent seeming things like old fashioned interests and hobbies get defenestrated also, and the people don't even seem to begin to understand anything spiritual, even whrn they might insist that they are religious. Thus the Death Of God in people has been disasterous in some ways, though in other ways these same people might have never been allowed to do much with it anyway, and God has only been elongated and pronounced Google.

Re: Do you agree with this?
I can move it but I was taking this thread to be a potential container for ethical argumentation and debate, so I placed a number of things to do with sliding ethical standards and the question "Do you agree with this?", so "Do you agree with the ethical implications and philosophy or ideology presented in the case", so that is what some of those videos are about and this article. In the article it is a "r*pe revenge" story, though it might not actually be true and just a criminal's defense, the general populace has a different idea about ethics and justice than the legal system or even the mainstream media seems to. All this goes back to how ethics are taught in schools or how ethical discussions reach children, and basically there isn't much going on and a lot of really scary things are reaching people during developmental stages as well. So if the person is telling the truth, the scenario presented is that some female pursued a m*rder in vengeance for what she says was a r*pe she experienced, similar to the r*pe revenge tale in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and probably other stories, though in that case the character might torture her abuser. To the general public, this is presented as fine and somehow an "eye for an eye", as people have moved away from the teachings of The Batman about not going down to the same level of the crimjnals, but still doing something about, while The God-Man Jesus is supposed to have told people to turn the other cheek and not pursue those who wrong you. The general public has never typically been too indoctrinated with moral and ethical philosophy except from sources like culture, religion, entertainment, and well known laws and edicts based in those things originally, while only a tiny portion of people overall have ever dealt with philosophy from philosophical texts or esteemed (in small circles overall) philosophers themselves. Many people today, like rhetoriticians, try to make arguments in defense of things culturally considered bad or wrong, and they even get some enjoyment possibly out of convincing people that something they may have a knee-jerk or provincial hillbilly reaction too as bad may be something they can grow to tolerate or even desire, almost like a sales person, but these people can be considered corruptors. In the final story for the character of Hercule Poirot, a villain whose only crime was convincing others to do wrong is what supposedly forced Hercule Poirot to break his oen personal rules, redtrictions, and the law, by doing what he felt was necessary to stop a threat to the public, whose only crime was being utterly convincing and managing to manipulate others to commit crimes.

In order to keep this thread going and to give it some new life, I had hoped to broaden it to ethical and philosophical issues brought up by cases or scenarios I present along with the question "Do You Agree With This?", meaning, in what way, using philosophy and ethics may whoever replies think about what is presented.
So in this last one, despite the truth or untruth of the actual claims in the case, does a person who was harmed have the right to harm back even years later when they may be able to? Is an appropriate punishment from a victim of r*pe to k*ll the r*pist? Why is it that most people might say yest? What kind of people would say no? So on and so forth. I fan move all these somewhere else, like maybe the Jimmy Saville Simulacra or some other place it you don't want these things brought up in this thread. Unless you put in other things though, it will likely not get used too much in that case.
As for another, less broad way of taking the initial complaint, they were claiming whenever they wrote that, that whoever the few who even touch upon philosophy in any academic or intellectual way as a specific topic approaches it as a variety of beliefs rather than a thinking tool, and I guess I can understand that it may appear people are doing that, and if they are doing that, that might be fine so long as they also are aware of thinking about things and developing ethical standards and morals and having a moral compass, since without any sort of ideas that guide their conduct or which might justify their restraint in certain matters, we might be dealing with a dangerous type of person, but then again, it is more than likely that dangerous types are the very same who never end up being able to think of things in relation to morals or ethics anyway as they don't know what that is all about or even care about such things. It is very possible that philosophy isn't for everyone, but it does seem like it should be for most, as most people think in these ways for the most part anyway and make similar judgments that don't stray too far from historical norms up until this point.
